A wonderful story of growing up, changing, the heart wrenching pain of seeing your parents (and especially your mother) as flawed people and not longer just as figures of unconditional love.
Several times throughout the book I had to pause and simply contemplate my own childhood, hold up my friendships against those described in the book, so raw and so real that I felt at once transported back to that adolescent turmoil. It's written so effortlessly and so vividly that you can't help but feel that you are Annie John, that you know all the things she felt. The depiction of the time and place are also so natural that they become instantly familiar.
Such a breezy read too, I highly recommend it.
