This story was amazing and I couldn’t put it down!
This is a classic telling of how AI can go wrong. Riley creates a video game, however, the character Max becomes aware and starts straying from their coding. Riley allows them room to wander as he studies them. Eventually their AI evolves to the point that they are granted a body, and they become even more self aware. Riley falls in love with them, and they us it to cause the downfall of humanity to get rid of all pain.
I’ve never read anything involving AI, and this gave me major Ultron vibes. This definitely inspired me to look into more of Blake Crouch’s work!
