The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson

5.0

Book 2 in the series picks up shortly after the first left off with a bombshell of a reveal. It's dealt with, and we move back to the mysteries at hand: the cold case surrounding the school's founding family and the recent death of a classmate.

A few new characters spice up Stevie's investigation, and I appreciate that they fit in so well. They feel as if they were always meant to be in the story, as opposed to being thrown in randomly for the second book. Also, new faces didn't detract from the original cast.

The story manages to end with a huge reveal about the cold case mystery set forth in book 1, an answer to a big question in book 2, and another huge twist to be answered in the next installment. Some of the clues are done so well in this book that I put the book down for a minute to marvel at how the author had thought them up and made them work so perfectly. Book 3 is out in January, and I can't wait to see how it all comes together.
