Another stunning piece by Wendy Zu with incredibly accessible design that provided just the right amount of detail without causing technological environmental overwhelm. Clem moves to Mars to work under her idol, a robotics specialist, but discovers this mentor is a broken person who lashes out and abuses others. She take most of it out on Kye, an artificial intelligence humanoid that she created unethically. This follows Clem and Kye's journey of deciphering his operating system and functionality, building trust that leads into a romantic relationship, and helping Kye truly come into his own consciousness for good. Along the way Clem is healing from her own emotional wounds from being a biological clone of her abusive mother.
I was a bit wary of the idea of an AI human romance but it was executed in a lovely, endearing way that focused on respect and compassion. Every book by this author feels like a warm hug of openness, understanding, and space for the unusual.
