Julie Chan Is Dead by Liann Zhang
2.5
This year's Julie Chan is Dead has a catchy title and a fun, bright cover, but Liann Zhang unfortunately didn't gain a fan out of me with this one. Overall, I would have rated this a 2.5; having to round, I rounded down as I disliked it more than I liked it. There are mixed reviews on this one; some people absolutely loved it, so, take my review with a grain of salt of course. It just wasn't for me. I was never able to really connect to the book, didn't like a single solitary character and just found the book overall kind of boring with no real depth.
The initial plot point of a twin switch after the affluent twin dies is a very intriguing concept. The less fortunate sister getting to finally step into the life that she "deserves" and see how the other half lives definitely had my attention.
"It Just happens. A natural reflex. I'm not proud to admit how much I use social media to cope. I struggle to exist without something flashing on the screen. Can't sit still without a video blasting to deaden my dark thoughts. Social media is the biggest thief of time but it's also an impossibly addictive form of escape." - I feel like this was the most relatable part of the book and it gave me hope. However, a little more than halfway through the book is where it lost me. The switch in story line left me feeling like I had started an entirely new book and I just lost interest.
It honestly almost became a DNF book for me.
