Haunted by Kelley Armstrong

3.0

The fifth book in the series continues the witch story-line, except this time you get to see things from Eve’s perspective. Eve is a half-demon witch, who has been portrayed as a villain in all the previous books. I was interested to see what Eve was all about, thinking we were in for some complex characterization.

Unfortunately, the hype did not live up to the actualization for me. Eve seemed like a pretty normal, well-adjusted ghost, who did not strike me as evil or dark, just slightly more willing to get her hands dirty. I was a bit disappointed, but I moved past it.

I had a hard time separating the ghost world from the real world because there was not much of a difference. Additionally, I do find Armstrong’s sexual scenes to be a bit overly vulgar at times.

However, the story was still intriguing to read and kept me on my toes. It ventured into dark alleys that I did not anticipate and created an interesting take on what the afterlife could look like.

If you enjoy adult-themed fantasy stories, then you likely will enjoy this tale. Armstrong is a strong fantasy writer, who has built a balanced paranormal world.
