Bitter Sweet Love by Jennifer L. Armentrout

4.0

"Love would always be enough, no matter what."

This short novela was more of a romance than fantasy, but after reading the White Hot Kiss trilogy I wanted to try this one out too. I know it says 0.5, so I was supposed to read it first, but it really wasn't a problem for me. This one was from Jasmine's POV and it's the story of how she and Dez became mates. It takes place 4 years before the events in White Hot Kiss and it sets the tone nicely, as we get to meet Zayne, Layla and Roth.

“So...” Zayne drew the word out, clearing his throat. “How’s Danika?”
The change of subject caught me off guard. “She’s doing well. She wanted me to tell you she said hi.”
Dez snorted. No doubt he was remembering Danika’s real request, which involved a picture and Zayne naked.

It was nice overall and it had some funny moments, but it bugged me that Jasmine and Layla were written kind of the same and they even had some similar lines (but then, again,  I noticed that because I have been through the trilogy as well).

My first kiss...and it was everything I’d imagined it to be, with the exception of there being an audience for it. But it was hard to acknowledge them or their cheering and whistles.

Another thing I couldn’t help but notice in what I've read from JLA is this unkissed maden type she chooses for her female MC ( Jasmine, Layla, Poppy from From Blood and Ash). It doesn’t bother me, but it's kind of becoming a pattern...

All in all, it's a nice romantic fantasy and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is a fan of this sort of books. It's also a really good start for those who want to get a taste of the world from White Hot Kiss.
