If I Fall, If I Die
by Michael Christie
This is the story of Will, a boy kept Inside by his agoraphobic mother. One day, he ventures Outside to discover both the good and bad in the world.
This book was very reminiscent of the story of Pinocchio to me. Will struggles between wanting to obey his mother, for the sake of her mental health, and wanting to experience all the world has to offer. Told from various points of view in a story that spans decades, this book touches on friendship, loss, family and acceptance. Michael Christie writes a story that is both beautiful, tragic and mysterious.
Ultimately, If I Fall, If I Die is a coming of age story about adventure and mystery. It's set against the background of mental illness and living in fear of what might happen, and what should have been.
