The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley

Sigh. This is the first book I've read from this author, and I'll confess that I herbsed the last 20% of it due to boredom and annoyance. I'm not one to get nitpicky about historical accuracy in a period romance, but the modernisms of behavior in this just piled on top of each other to the point of ridiculousness. It was such a promising premise, too – orphans plucked out of poverty by an eccentric and wealthy baron, living well, but on the bare edges of respectable society – but, alas, the characters were bland, or just a collection of circus-like quirks, all (save our heroine) remarkably unscathed by what had to be very difficult childhoods. The only truly interesting one was Philippa, the heiress our Duke initially seeks to marry. I'd enjoy reading her story, but not from this author, I'm afraid.
