Alex Craft always manages to find herself smack dab in the middle of trouble. Book 2 is full of the insanity that is that Fae and their politics. It makes for some serious confusion, but I feel like it was handled well. Also confusing is the descriptions of the Aetheric and how it woks. I'm still confused at times. The story kept pace decently, but had some lulls. I appreciate that Alex is one of the smarter heroines that I've come across in recent years and isn't as impulsive as some. She does her research and works on a case to figure it out. I also love that she shows humanity. She's constantly worried about her friends and dog and isn't self centered, but she's also rational and can focus in a stressful situation.
Now the one thing that I can't wrap my head around is Alex's infatuation with Death. I can kind of understand it because she's had a crush on him since she was a kid and that's kind of grown up with her, but what does she know about him? Nothing! Not even his real name, if he even has one. He's creeping on someone he's been following around since SHE was a child. He randomly flits in and out of her life expecting to be able to dictate what she should or shouldn't do under the guise of "he cares" but offers little to no explanations. I know he told her that he can't tell her things, but he doesn't even seem to be making any effort to tell her what he can. I feel like even a simple conversation of 5 yes or no questions would help explain.
And on the other hand we have Falin. A huge jackass, works for the literal Ice Queen, and at times is just a vague as Death. I give him some credit for actually explaining things to Alex and offering insights to his previous choices and where they've led him in his life, but he's still not much better for her. I really despise that all stories with a twinge of romance are subjected to a love triangle with a pissing contest between the rivals, but drama sells I guess. I would love to see her break the "triangle" and just find someone who is actually good for her with no strings attached to prior commitment.
I still like the series and am re-reading it anxiously waiting the finale in book 6.
