A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

5.0

Imagine a magic school with staircases and cool magic classes but with monsters who definitely want to eat you. That's the setting where El has to learn to control the dark power she unwillingly possesses. When the school hero saves El's life for the second time, El devises a plan to prove her worth to her classmates. That is, until she starts to realize the school has secrets of its own and maybe mere survival isn't enough.

El is a fantastic character whose wit and sarcasm endeared her to me more than I expected. Her antics inside a dangerous school make other magic-based academia novels look tame. I'm very much looking forward to the next installment.
