Tory Bodeen lived in a nightmare of a childhood with her religiously strict father and her spineless mother. Her father beat her to drive the demons away, but she took the beatings and hid them behind quiet eyes and too adult body language. As a child, she ignored her nightmare by spending her time with Hope Lavelle, a girl with heart and need for adventure. The night she was to sneak out and meet Hope in their secret marsh hideout, her father beat her bloody. This is also the same night she got her first vision of what happened to her friend in that dark swamp. At age 8, Hope had been murdered alone while Tory hid in the closet after her beating nursing her wounds. Years later, Tory returns to Progress and lives in her old childhood home to prove that she'd moved on from her childhood and to say the goodbye she never got to say to her childhood friend.
Another Nora Masterpiece. I sincerely love the characters she creates. They each have these backgrounds that have readers gravitate toward them. Even the prissy and hard characters, you can't hate them. It's so hard to do so when you get to know why they are the way they are. In Carolina Moon, I was riveted by Tory's story and all the people around her. I was enthralled with the story.
Nora is so skilled at giving us glimpses into each character and have you guessing who did it. Who killed Hope. Who did these things? I love that I couldn't figure it out until the end. Even then, it was a shock and made it all the more painful and emotional for the reader to find out. Above all, Nora tells a great story and leaves the reader feeling like they belonged in Progress along with the rest of her characters.
