margindoodles 's review for:
Bird by Bird
by Anne Lamott
This would have been a solid four stars (or perhaps even slightly more) if it weren't for Lamott's casual ableism and, shall we say, Lena Dunham-ish, I Am A White Woman sensibility re: humor and race. I'm tempted to dock another star just re-reading the first sentence of my review.
But parts of this book are genuinely wonderful and encouraging, and I can see myself referring back to it for help with things that I struggle with as a writer. Much like Stephen King's On Writing, this is thoroughly Lamott's voice and sensibility; the way she weaves personal anecdotes into her advice is pretty great. When she's giving advice from a place of real earnestness and love for the actual practice of writing (which is often), this book truly shines.
