The Promise by Damon Galgut
4.0

I’m back and forth on this intricately structured, omnisciently narrated saga of a white family/South Africa over multiple decades. It lays down a minefield of the issues encountered and points of view held by Afrikaaners over this time period and drives home the racism, violence, casual neglect, and white savior naïveté they have embodied. This book is a smelly artisanal cheese that needs a fine wine pairing to balance out the voices. So, off to find one.

On a petty note, I found the “let’s just say this happened” and “perhaps this...no, let’s say that” aspect of addressing the reader irritated me every time and took me out of the flow. I’m assuming it had a different intended effect that perhaps I’m missing, literary non-sophisticate that I am.
