Pere Goriot by Honoré de Balzac
3.0

I have wanted to read a Balzac novel for a long by time because he's so famous in the history of literature, and is so often referenced. I'm happy to have read this because I can definitely see the deferences between this and most English lit of the time. He is clearly a good writer- very character driven novel- and very insightful about humanity. However, it was pretty sad and didn't have a single likable character. Either he was a cynic at heart, like Hardy, or he made it his mission to uncover human suffering and focus on that- which is not my favorite type of writing. I may read him again someday, but I won't run to it.
