*There is some spice, lots of language, and lots of violence in this book*

I liked this book, but Xaden's issues frustrated me a bit. And the mega cliffhanger at the end was a bit annoying. I get that the story isn't finished, but it was like Yarros was trying really hard to get that "what?!" moment in there right at the end. I mean, I'll still read the next book when it comes out, but I'll be annoyed about it.

I also still have some nagging questions about the world itself. Basgiath is still just as brutal as ever, even though they all know just how dangerous their enemy is. They need all the soldiers they can get, so letting students kill each other seems ridiculous.

Also, it seems really convenient that even though everyone thought venin were fables for ages, all of a sudden, there are venin everywhere, even within Basgiath. One student even seems to accidentally turn during a sparring class. If it's so easy to turn venin, why weren't people aware that venin existed earlier? Why did anyone think they were myths? If there are so, so many of them, how did they keep their existence a secret for so long? We'll see if any of these plot holes are resolved in the rest of the series.
