Venom: Dark Origin by Zeb Wells
3.0
'This world is hard and cold and sharp...and now so am I.'
Admitted not a fan of Medina's art style (nor the colouring), but Eddie's moral greyness coupled with a sense of justice keeps him interesting. He is a complex character, with a solid and sympathetic backstory which admits human weakness, mistakes and ineptitude, and the pitiless harshness of circumstance, and one man's confrontation with that unpredictable terrain otherwise blandly called 'life'. It is that beguiling combination of darkness and light - and, fascinatingly, how he gives in but also pulls back from that temptation- that allows this reader to root for him. It ends on a defeated and yet touching note.
