Rolling in the Deep

I love Mira's novels; her Feed series was phenomenal and the various short related novellas were quite good also. However, I was a bit disappointed in this one (not in the Feed universe, just our normal, boring one :-) ).
My biggest gripe was the uneven pacing. I felt the beginning took too long and the middle and end parts were too rushed. I haven't seen that with her other novellas so maybe it was just me. In addition, some of the basic science behind the "antagonists" was ignored (probably for the purposes of the story) with relation to deep-sea creatures quickly surfacing with no ill-effects. It was nothing major but definitely less thought out than her zombie explanation.
THe high point for me was the amount of detail and authenticity surrounding the "mermaid troupe." I wouldn't be surprised if she had spent some serious research time on that subject. It read very well and I was fascinated by the detail. If she made it up, then even more kudos go to her!
