A clever spin on the detective story - felt like a bottle episode of a TV show. Found the detective quite unlikeable, so don't know how I'd take to one of his 'regular' appearances, but liked the pathos of this. I appreciated how serious and passionate it was about wanting to recontextualise both history and detective fiction. No idea how reliable the actual history is.
