4.5 stars. This is one beautiful work of storytelling. This was un-put-down-able. I’m always shocked to come across nonfiction that is written better than 99% of fiction novels. And this totally delivers. It’s a simple and mild story told so deeply and movingly that I can instantly see why it was so popular over the last ten years or so.
I may upgrade this to five stars at some point but I hesitate to rate historical fiction so highly unless there’s truly something important to take away from it. And while the themes and ideas here are strong, they’re not quite to my five star standard. But maybe it will be upon revisiting in the future.
Regardless, this is mostly flawless and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
