this was a book that I couldn't (or, didn't *want* to) put down, and I read the whole thing in more or less two sittings. Winterson's writing of her namesake character Jeanette was masterful, you can sense her getting older without very many direct calls to it at all. I really can't overstate how impressive I find the gradual morphing of voice from beginning to end. chef's fuckin kiss
