City Spies by James Ponti

What a fantastic book, I cannot wait to read the rest of the series!!

A group of kids with unique talents and abilities (often orphaned/abandoned/in foster care) are brought together from all over the world to become MI6 agents, operating out of a castle in Scotland to accompany adult agents in secret missions they need help with things only kids can do or achieve! What is not to love?

This story was interesting, fun and exciting while still having real-life hardships and situations without getting too bogged down by those hard/sad things.

I loved the focus on working together as a team, the kids taking turns as the "alpha" (leader) for the assignments, they teach each other different skills and learn together. I liked that the adults were kind and good leaders who felt trustworthy, and while adults were present in many situations, they also allowed the kids to experience and figure things out on their own. They trusted the kids to make decisions and do what they were trained to do, which made it so the kids didn't have to sneak around and lie all the time like in a lot of other adventure/mystery kinds of stories.
It felt authentic and interesting while being an overall easy read!

Notes:
- The head MI6 agent's code name is "Mother" which is confusing as he is a man and is searching for his wife (former MI6 agent) and kids. So the "Mother" thing throws you off a bit. Which I suppose is kinda of the point.
- mentions of kids being orphaned or abandoned
- abusive/neglectful foster parents (locked a kid in a closet) and teachers
-The only really scary part was describing dead bodies/skeletons in the catacombs.
