Rounded up a bit but overall, I loved it. I wasn’t sold initially but the story took on force as it went on. I keep thinking about how the phrase “hope makes a show of reviving” is not so different from the biblical “hope does not disappoint.”
In some ways, the book reads like it’s translated - a certain choppiness of communications - but I think that’s more about cultural norms and expectations than about linguistics and in that sense, a culture that’s very different from the one I am in can be enlightening. I also found the book to be true in its critique of desire, acquisition, and capitalism and its honoring of community, goodness, and hope. I made a LOT of kindle highlights of the best stuff.
