Wow, what a challenging read. It weaves so many heavy topics together, I stopped reading at one point because I realized I was legitimately upset. This book dives into wildy uncomfortable topics, doesn’t hide them behind euphemisms, and characters deal with the fallout however they can. Almost nothing gets a neat, tidy ending. An amazingly nuanced book, I was shocked to read other people’s responses to it and find that they differed so much from my own. They was so much awfulness from both Human and Oankali. I personally ended up more disgusted by the Oankali but I can see how that is hugely influenced by my own experiences. My outlook is forever altered by this book.
Moderate: Genocide, Infertility, Rape, Sexism, Slavery, Forced institutionalization, Gaslighting, Colonisation
