Starfish by Lisa Fipps

I don’t want to rate this book as I never like to rate kids books, and even though it was an important story to tell and was told in a beautiful way, it really fell flat and was frustrating to read. The aspect I struggled with was the main characters age. When reading, I thought she was at least 16 or 17, because she wasn’t in college… but then we find out she is 11? While I do not know what it is like in her shoes, I have a hard time thinking an 11 year old has so much self awareness and clarity of mind to take on such complex relationships in her life in a way that I feel most 20 or 30 year olds can’t do.

I also struggled with the cruelty of the people around her. I know the words said were said to the author, and it was really hard to read. I think the cruelty and bluntness of it was intentional as to jar the reader into understanding what it is like.

Not sure what more to add. Quick read, definatly for kids and has a very important message people should learn from.
