paperthinelliott 's review for:
Clockwork Princess
by Cassandra Clare
The first time I picked this book up was in May, I read the prologue, promptly burst into the tears and put the book back down, telling my friend I just wasn't ready yet.
I finally got back around to in October, missing my favourite characters and ready to brave the emotional trauma for the sake of reading more content of them. And already on the first chapter I was hooked. Normally I struggle a fair amount with Cassandra Clare's typically slow-paced beginnings to her books but this one was an exception. 500 and something pages suddenly felt like 50 for easy it was to be swept up in this story.
By this point in the series, if you're anything like me, you would have fallen in love with every single character in this series. The way Cassandra Clare built each of them slowly throughout the books, gives Clockwork Princess so much power as you have 10 central characters that each have stories and development of their own and none of them feel like they've been rushed or left without detail.
It was about halfway through this book I realised this would be a 5 star read and I was already thinking of all the things I would praise it for in this review. But when I read that epilogue, I was honestly left speechless. In what felt like such little time, the Infernal Devices had turned from being a prequel to The Mortal Instruments (one of my favourites when I was 13) to being an absolute favourite within its own right and objectively one of the best Young Adult series I've ever read, far surpassing The Mortal Instruments in terms of quality.
This book reminded me of all the reasons I love young adult fantasy and just the sheer amount of emotion words on a page can make you feel.
I am basically begging you, if you haven't read please do immediately and treat yourself.
