There was lots to love about this book, Nesta’s recovery journey, finding her friendships with Emerie and Gwyn, the three of them training together and bonding over books and their past trauma, as well as Nesta’s friendship with the House of Wind, Nesta’s blossoming bond with Feyre during this book, the dancing in the Court of Nightmares, Cassian and Nesta’s bickering, and their frenemies to lovers story, was all beautiful.
I loved the Blood Rite chapters, they gave me those fast paced, interesting plot line, action packed scenes the book would have otherwise been missing.
There’s obviously a whole bunch of graphic smut which whilst I knew was coming still shocked me!!! But the smut scenes are good and well written, and I enjoyed the switching between both Nesta’s and Cassian’s POVs during.
One of the things I struggled with was the often hateful ways the inner circle were portrayed through Nesta’s eyes, I get that this was a book from her perspective and she has a lot of issues with Feyre’s friends that she works through, but I didn’t feel the Cassian POVs and his love for them counteracted Nesta’s hate enough. Add into that the weird out of character things the inner circle started doing during this book - namely keeping such massive secrets from each other (why the fuck did everyone keep such a massive secret from Feyre about her own damn medical care and then erupt with anger when Nesta did the right thing and informed Feyre); also making naive ‘if you die I die’ bargains (this seems really ignorant and not future thinking of feysand, like if you know you want to start a family don’t make stupid bargains where both of you will die at once, opening up the potential to leave any future children orphaned)(edit: turns out I thought this was in fact extremely romantic when Feysand made this bond in ACOWAR lol at me) - but I felt myself falling more and more out of love with Rhys and Feyre which is NOT WHAT I WANT, I was obsessed with them after the first 4 books and I wanted it to stay that way. I feel like they completely changed in this book and I’m really really unhappy about my now lasting impression. I want to go back to my ACOFAS lasting impression before I ever picked up ACOSF.
I wasn’t here for the stuff with the Archeron father and how Nesta felt guilty for not forgiving her father who apparently loved her unconditionally. Let’s not all forget that he actually was a waste of space and this book did not make me feel any kind of redemption for him and his choices.
I am confused how Nesta, Gwyn and Emerie did SO WELL in the Blood Rite despite only training for a fraction of the time other warriors usually go through. But do you know what I don’t even care, I love that between the three of them they are a force to be reckoned with and won the damn thing. But also where was the pride after their win from people like Cassian? Like what an incredible achievement which in the end never got celebrated like an achievement.
The storyline with Briallyn and Koschei felt kinda rushed and a bit redundant, but it sets the scene for a larger battle with Koschei which I’m sure we’ll get in a future book.
Overall this book was good, Nesta’s story is an interesting one and I really loved her character development, even if other characters seem to have been sacrificed for the purposes of Nesta’s said development.
Satisfactory ending? Yes, if a little rushed.
