Beasts of Ruin by Ayana Gray

I really enjoyed this sequel in the series. It was an easy read and picked up right where the first book left off, which I appreciated. I liked how the chapters alternated between Koffi, Ekon, and Binti’s stories — the author did a great job weaving their perspectives together in a way that felt seamless.

I especially loved getting more insight into Koffi’s family — her mother and grandmother — and seeing how they navigated being darajas, or in her mother’s case, being connected to one. Learning more about the daraja order and the different powers within it was a really cool layer that added depth to the world-building.

Part 2 also did a nice job pushing the story forward while giving us some historical context, which I enjoyed. That said, the reveal about Ekon and his mother toward the end felt kind of sudden and random to me. Maybe I missed some subtleties earlier on, but it just seemed to come out of nowhere lol.

Still, I’m excited to see where the next book goes, especially with Ekon’s family. Overall, a solid read that kept me engaged all the way through.
