One of my all time favorite books. I first read this when I was about 10 years old. Holds up well to a reread a decade and a half or so later. My tastes haven't changed much -- and this likely helped shape them: wacky and irreverent sci-fi with batty characters.
For the audiobook, I was compelled to check the release date against the movie and confirmed that they were around the same time. It feels clear to me that Stephen Fry was inspired by the performances of the actors playing the characters in the movie. I swear I could hear Martin Freeman's voice through the audiobook as Arthur.
