Thirteen Storeys by Jonathan Sims
2.0

The book was ok. I think the concept of 12 different short stories is good in theory but they all had the same format which in turn made the book repetitive and uninteresting in the middle. I did enjoy how the later characters were somehow involved or mentioned in previous chapters. If they had very different personalities, backgrounds and endings, it would’ve been a better read. Even if there were only 7 characters introduced. I feel like 12 short stories of the same outcome wasn’t needed.

The last chapter was disappointing. I feel that the whole commentary of the book was on how the rich exploit the poor and Tobias dies as a result to show he didn’t get away with it. but it felt so rushed and as if it wasn’t the main plot line of the book?

I wish the book was either longer so there was more depth to the characters or even more information on Tobias. I know some chapters gave you the background you needed but if there was more wrote on him and his perspective of benefitting from the poor, then his death would’ve felt more profound rather than just a quick way to wrap up the short stories together.

Overall it was an ok book. Not great or enticing. It’s disappointing as the overall plot of the book could’ve been so much better if it was wrote in a different format.
