Hopeless by Colleen Hoover is a typical CoHo romance with a twist. It tells the story of a teenager named Sky whose life is turned upside down when she meets Dean Holder. Holder thinks that he knows her from somewhere. What unfolds with Sky’s life after has her questioning everything about her upbringing. As per typical CoHo, the narrative style is not traditional. Each chapter opens with the date and time of day. The first page threw me into the story. The second chapter opens with “2 months earlier”, and Ms. Hoover develops how Sky reaches the point she is at in the first chapter with twist after twist. Because of the highly dramatic opening of the book I made assumptions. And wow was I off. What I assumed and what was actually happening were such opposites, I kicked myself for making the assumptions I made. This novel is not at all predictable. Each time I thought I knew what to expect, the unexpected happened. Ms. Hoover pays great attention to detail. The story loops in and out of itself throughout the book. Because of the storyline, I thought the ending would be clean and neat. But it’s not. There is hope, but it’s still uncertain. It made the story that much more real for me. Out of all the CoHo novels I’ve read, this one is really excellent. I give it 4.5 night skies: 🌌🌌🌌🌌.5
