I remember loving this book as a child when I read it in school so, when I was scheduled to teach students of the same age I read it, I thought it would be a great idea to analyze it with a reading guide I found online. Not only does this book have no nuance, two dimensional characters, and no hint of empathy towards the people that suffered the atrocities within the Holocaust but It practically begs you to side and empathize with the nazi family over everyone else because of their traumas. I will be removing this out of my curriculum once I have assessed other works.
