The Stars Are Fire by Anita Shreve
4.0

Based on a true event in the post WW-II years, a horrific fire in Maine changes the lives within a community forever. In 1947, one fire wiped out nine towns.

This is the story of a very young mother of two, Grace, trapped in a loveless marriage. Hers is a traditional role. She cannot drive and has never worked outside the home. While her husband is handsome and is a hard worker, his mother cannot abide her and her husband has few words at the end of the day. Only her best friend Rosie and her mother provide emotional support.

The fire places Grace in the situation where she must learn new skills and dig deep to find her inner strength. Other men express interest in her, a job opens up. No more spoilers. This is a slow, thoughtful read of one young woman finding herself and making choices about how her life will unfold going forward. There is low-grade abuse (compared to some) and the ever present question of what does a wife owe her husband. Sometimes it takes a major castastrophe to force people to face these questions.

This is Anita Shreve's final book and a great contribution to women's fiction.
