The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

3.0

I was honestly a bit disappointed by this book.
A fantastic kind of plot, startlingly original with the potential to be truly unique, and the author chose to turn it into a love story. And in my opinion, it wasn't done well.
Their relationship didn't make any sense to me; everything about it felt way too rushed. Ceony hadn't known Emery long when everything jumped off, so her entire motivation for going after his heart is ridiculous.
I had no reason to sympathise with this character. We don't know much about her; she's witty, studious, and she cooks well. I really couldn't have cared if she lived or died.
Now I will give credit where credit is due; there were a few moments I didn't see coming. There were a few moments where I was caught off guard by the way the author put words concepts I've wrestled with myself. Holmberg has proved that she certainly has that special something I search for in my writers, so I will definitely be coming back to her books.
Sadly, just not this one.
