The ending may have redeemed this book. I wasn't thrilled with how the story was paced and the time jumps. I need more information about the people and their focii (magic). Are they fae? Pointed ears and longevity. How old are they supposed to be? There wasn't enough clarification on things that good fantasy always spells out. I feel like the Riftborne don't know anything about their history based on how they were raised, which keeps readers in the dark too. The romance was meh and honestly could have been left out completely. I wanted more from the training scenes too. Like it was fine, but I didn't find myself fully immersed. I will read the next 2 books because I'm curious to see if there's improvement, but I don't have high hopes. It felt too quick and yet dragged out all at once.
