I was looking to enjoy the creepy, sentient forest/atmosphere, plus dark fairy-tale retelling and hope that the plot/world-building might outweigh the angsty romance, but I don't think it did for me. I would say the book is 50/50, but for me it wasn't enough and the magic elements actually confused me a little, lol. Also, would say this is new adult, because adult themes/ages of characters, but closer to contemporary YA in terms of plot points/structure/vibes—lots of hair over eyes, leaning, keeping secrets just because...haha
