Oresama Teacher, Vol. 1
by Izumi Tsubaki
I feel so conflicted about this series already! While I was laughing out loud during some parts, others made me want to drop it entirely. It's a mess of good things and awkward things and... I just can't help but worry. I give it a three for now, even though a 2 is tempting.
Mafuyu, our heroine, is capital-H Hilarious. I loved her right from the start. The immediate counterpart, however--our "teacher"--turned me off completely. I do NOT like this guy, and I get angry at Mafuyu for even considering liking him. Even after she remembers how big of a douche bag he was, and realizing that he's still very much a douche bag, she still gets all shoujo-rom-com around him. Please, girl, cut it out. There are no glimmers of hope, at least not in this volume. I guess girls who like the "ultimate bad-boy" may find him appealing, but I found him to be a Jerk. Now, her friend Nayasaka, him I like. Even though they're not entirely friends yet, they work so well as a duo and the comedy abounds. I hope he'll be a good contrast to crappy-teacher-dude.
