Private Rites by Julia Armfield
3.0
I really loved the not-so-distant future setting where constant rain and the melting of the ice caps (presumably) lead to constant flooding. This was very subtly imaginative in the book, but unfortunately believably tangible. Confession: I haven’t actually read King Lear before, but this was a very interesting character study of the three siblings regardless of the Shakespeare retelling. Finally, I kept waiting for this to pick up and for something big to happen, but nothing did until the last 30 minutes of the book. It was an interesting ending, but I wish it had been developed a bit more or taken a bit more time to explore when it did happen!
Graphic: Emotional abuse, Suicide, Death of parent
Moderate: Abandonment
