Jackal by Erin E. Adams

dark mysterious tense medium-paced

3.5

An incredibly engaging novel that I think could have benefited from a bit of editing down. I was hooked from the start and wanted to race through it to figure out what was happening. But there were lots of random plot points that served as red herrings, but it just drew the plot out to a frustrating degree. Let me get through this book!! I wanna know! The ending also just kinda got… weird, which I enjoyed but feel a bit confused about. I’m unsure if I could explain the ending or connect all of the dots. Ultimately it was fun (and by fun I mean the pace, the mystery, and the strong energy of the prose, the subject matter is obviously very heavy and can be a bit brutal) despite some things I didn’t enjoy as much, so I’d recommend for a supernatural murder mystery that gets twisty and explores race and racism in the US.
