Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett
5.0

I love this book!

Vimes being an asshole but not a racist, Vetinari encouraging Vimes to look into the murders by expressly forbidding him to do it… I know that it’s overstated, but Pratchett really does understand the human condition and it shows in all of its idiosyncratic beautiful little ways in his books.

I love the Legolas Gimli Detritus Cuddy dynamic. I love that Vimes gives away half his pay to people widowed by watchmen. I love that there’s another side of drunk, past sober with particularly strong coffee. Vimes’ theory of economics through boots, the palimpsest of cities built on top of cities. As always Pratchett’s prose is spot-on and his plot is wonky and forgettable beyond the broad strokes.

This book is on par with the best Pratchett I’ve read.
