If this wasn't a book club read I would have DNF'd it about 100 pages in. As it is, I skimmed most of the second half because I just wanted it to be over. I just do not understand the hype. This book completely lacked heart and wonder and imagination - it was too scientific and clinical. They were invited into the Library of Alexandria for crying out loud and few of them seem to show much excitement or amazement. Like it didn't even surprise them that the Library still existed. The book reminded me a lot of everything I hated about  The Magicians. I even went back and read my review of that book, and nearly everything I said about that applies here. I didn't care about a single one of the characters - they were all selfish and annoying. Even the "big twist" at the end didn't impress me. I have no plans to read the next book. I am a tiny bit curious about what might happen next, but I'll just find a synopsis somewhere rather than hate read the book just to get to the end.
