Bound by Blood by Jessica M. Butler

3.0

Erryn is an orphan living in a small cottage making soup for passersby. One evening, Erryn is unable to sleep due to how humid it is when she hears whimpering and suddenly a small ugly dog with wings comes running out of the trees to her house. Despite the warnings to never let anything into her home, especially at night, she lets the dog in and then a blood fae comes bursting out of the trees chasing the dog demanding it back. They make a bargain for her to keep the dog and she’ll make the blood fae soup to help him restore his powers that were the dog.

Some things I liked: The world is fascinating! There are different mythical beings and humans mixed in, and the magic system is unique. I really liked Ryul the blood fae, although he did seem to change from broody and gruff to a big softie real fast. He’s definitely a hidden cinnamon roll, it just seemed like his personality changed. I liked some of the side characters in here, made for an interesting read. The romance is also sweet and angsty and you just wonder “will they, won’t they?”. And I loved the floating castle called Quinn!

I wasn’t a fan of how the story started, of how Erryn and Ryul meet. She keeps asking him why would she give the dog back to him and he literally tells her three times, and yet she still asks again and refuses to give back his magic(literally). It just was such an odd meeting and I didn’t really get it. I also mentioned earlier about how Ryul seemed to be completely different as the story progressed. It just seemed like his personality totally changed. Erryn wasn’t my favorite, she wasn’t the smartest cookie and was a bit selfish at times I thought. And the romance, although cute, was not my favorite just based on how they met and how it progressed, I just wasn’t a huge fan of it.

Overall, it’s a quick and sweet read. I recommend it if you love fae and enemies to lovers romances. I received a free digital copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
