White Flight: Atlanta and the Making of Modern Conservatism
by Kevin M. Kruse
Atlanta up to and including the Civil Rights Act proves an ideal stage for Kruse's examination of white flight and the ramifications it has had on politics up to this day.
It is an insightful work filled with strong references. Kruse presents a new aspect of Atlanta's civil rights battle in each chapter, skillfully tying together events and quotes to illustrate his points in each well-focused section of the book.
I have to say, parts of this book took a broader perspective than others, and I found those parts harder to engage with because of it. It is a fairly dry text (as most academic books tend to be), but that made the strings of dates and figures a bit harder to follow.
In all, it was well worth a read, and it did provide new (to me) insight into the evolution of the Republican Party into what it has become today. I'd definitely recommend it to any reader curious about civil rights or the Republican southern strategy!
