Ghost Town by Kevin Chen
Did not finish book. Stopped at 16%.
This was the only book, of the 130ish I have read so far this year, that I have DNFed.
This story lacked life in its characters and the blasé way in which they experience various forms of abuse felt disheartening to me, especially because there is no upside or silver lining and the characters (at least, to the point I got to) felt, perhaps appropriately, as if they were ghosts drifting through their lives. This, paired with the casual way other details are mentioned (the dead cats hanging from the bamboo trees, for instance, was used as a flat-falling joke at least once), left a bitter taste in my mouth.
Perhaps I was not in the headspace for such a story- I've read much darker stories before and been fine- but I couldn't bring myself to keep reading because there was nothing drawing me in, which sucks because the premise sounds so interesting!
