Hour of the Bees by Lindsay Eagar
4.0

This was a really well done fantasy-esque book. It’s an award winner for middle grades for very good reason.

The summer before junior high, Carolina (but call her Carol) ventures into the New Mexico desert with her mom, dad, baby brother and half sister. Her grandfather, Serge, has dementia and her family is spending the summer readying his run down sheep ranch for sale.

Carol’s Dad and grandfather had a falling out before her birth and their relationship is exceedingly strained. The family has prepared themselves as best they can for Serge’s increasingly failing mind.

Carol excepts to hate her time at the ranch and she does, but she begins to connect to Serge and the land and mostly, his stories about the Rose and Sergio and the magic tree and the bees the carried away the water and brought a hundred year drought.

The story masterfully weaves in reality with fantasy and touchingly handles Carol managing her new connection with her grandfather and his failing health.

Not sure that this is a great choice for young advanced readers, but it could be a good option for older reluctant readers.
