The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst
4.0

I think this was officially the most Studio Ghibli-esque book I’ve ever read, and I really want them to adapt it!! Trees like skyscrapers, magical spirits of all shapes and sizes, wolf friends, beautiful descriptions of nature, political intrigue, betrayal, GAH!

I was really confused when I started this book because it was supposed to be the author’s first adult series, and in the beginning the protagonist is 10 years old and ends up going to a magic training type of school where she learns how to control elemental spirits. I was like, wait…is this supposed to be a middle grade or YA? However, the years do progress quickly. When she starts school it’s an instant 5 year time jump, and then she graduates at age 19.

I won’t lie, there were times when I was a bit bored, but that is a personal issue I have with books that involve a lot of training. However, overall the story was incredibly dreamy, magical, heart wrenching, and compelling.

It was also very refreshing to have an MC with magical abilities that isn’t just automatically good at everything. She actually has the weakest ability of the bunch, and has to earn every inch of what she accomplishes, and also has to find different ways of learning compared to her peers.

The point of the school & training are to ultimately enroll in a trial to become heir to the Queen, should she ever fall.

MILD SPOILER:
There are some moments of absolute DEVASTATION in this book, so be prepared! Can’t wait for the next installment!
