I love the idea behind this series, but this first book wasn’t terribly interesting. The side characters were much more interesting than the main ones. The character development and pacing was a bit jagged, jumping ahead too quickly at many points. Simon’s PoV was too infrequent to be a complete perspective so we really didn’t get much insight into any development there. He felt more like a prop than a participant in the story.

There were also a number of premises to the story that just didn’t make sense - like Annabelle’s obsession with marrying a peer. She isn’t noble herself, and at the time wealthy gentry were a well accepted part of the upper class. What she needed was money not status so why was she so fixated on peers specifically? She should’ve been going after Simon long ago.
