I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer by Michelle McNamara

challenging dark informative sad slow-paced

4.0

This haunting and masterful account of the Golden State Killer should be a true crime classic if such a thing exists. Michelle McNamara, a gifted journalist, died tragically while investigating the case for many years. For over 10 years a mysterious and violent predator stalked Northern California, sexually assaulting 50 people before moving down South where he committed 10 murders. Three decades later, McNamara made it her mission to find the psychopath.

True crime is a new genre for me and I’ve only just stepped into it. I’ll Be Gone In The Dark was my second crime read and gosh was it ever powerful. Both terribly sad and incredibly researched we not only delve into the horrors committed by a murderer but we also see into the portrait of a woman’s obsession. How such an obsession takes over. I really found this a hard book to read in terms of the heavy feel of the topic itself and knowing McNamara passed before he was apprehended. It’s undoubtably an incredibly written novel, McNamara had a gift.

Recommend for those looking for a emotionally challenging read and those who just can’t look away from true crime, 4✨.
