The Help
by Kathryn Stockett
Pro's:
- I enjoyed the act of reading the book - it was an "easy" read and I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next
- I loved the multi-dimensional aspect of the characters. No one was entirely good or evil, much like the author's portrayal of her hometown, Jackson, Mississippi. I especially found this to be true of Skeeter's mother, who starts out as an entirely negative character but becomes more sympathetic as the book goes on.
Con's:
- For all the hype this book received, it did not seem especially groundbreaking or new.
- I couldn't help comparing it to The Power of One, one of my favorite books. The Power of One, which deals with the topic of apartheid in South Africa partly from the perspective of child/servant relationships and succeeds in being infinitely more powerful.
Overall, a good page turner but somewhat lacking in "punch".
