Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

Frequent quips and a very likable main character help this through a plot that seems disjointed at times and down right confusing at others. Character and setting are great but lots of names being thrown in all at once had me checking the character list frequently in the second act of the book. Necromancy is cool with the accompanying bloodshed but not overdone.

Edit:

On reread this was amazing. The fight scenes had me back tracking a bit to realize what was happening but over all this was great. The plot points I thought were disjointed were just me being an idiot and not paying attention enough. Just read this.
